My laptop was fine for a short while, also running on XP, but it did not last. It progressively became so slow that I was forced to buy a new laptop. Herein lies the problem. The laptop that I bought is running on Windows 10 Professional. How do I file share and share a printer between my desktop that is running on Windows XP and my laptop that is running on Windows 10?

I have spent days reading articles and forums while trying to run my business as well. So I Just cannot thank you enough for htis.

Thanks Again Matt Z. Thanks for the help. I used the directions given and used the Photosmart driver which comes with Vista. It works great.

Thanks again. I have wireless printing to the photosmart This solved it perfectly for the exact same problem occuring for my combination of Win XP Pro computer as print server and my Win XP x64 client. I'm in a dorm room with 4 guys and we have an extra old laptop with XP sharing the printer.

Only the guy with XP could print while the other the three of us with vista had no luck, our computers would freeze up but now it works! Why was it so hard to find this one little post? It would help so many people! Okay, so this didn't work for me.

Or let me rephrase, it DID work, but also didn't. I want to be able to log in which I can and print from the Vista computer onto a printer connected to my XP laptop which I can't. Please help!! I'm about to downgrade to XP Pro if this doesn't work. This fixed our problem in a local auto shop I was setting up from an XP shared printer to a Vista desktop.

I'm trying to connect my new laptop with Vista to share the printer. I followed the steps up untill step 7. But when I just click on the Trekker port and select it, it allows it but then it will not work when I send docs to it. I also changed the name of my shared printer to Brother HL just in case that might have been it, but it still doesn't print. Any idea's? Posted 12 December - PM. Posted 10 April - PM. Any suggestions? Posted 05 July - PM. Thank you all for this information. Even with the information provided on this thread, I still had to do more research and have solved my similar issues. First, I too have in the house an XP machine and a Vista laptop. I did indeed install the LLTD and that did not solve the problem. I have an Epson printer and followed the general information on the driver install on the Vista machine and plugging in the printer to the Vista laptop to complete the driver install.

That too did not work. It just had to be a Firewall issue. I'm using McAfee and that in itself is a pain to figure out. Did not make sense. That did the trick. Vista machine now sees and can access all the XP. Thank you all again for this great thread and leading me to solve this issue. Posted 02 September - PM. I've followed the original post's walk-through to the letter, but when I get to step seven, it tells me it cannot find that port. The workgroups are the same, I think, but I'm so illiterate about networking that I'm not even sure what information I need to give for anyone here to come back with a meaningful reply.

I have the computers plugged into a hub I live at a Dorm ; they can all play LAN video-games together just fine -- so I know the computers can see each other on some level. Posted 11 October - AM. I get ot step 7 and it comes up saying "access denied" even though my printer is set up for sharing with everyone on my xp pc.
